Allopurinol is a xanthine oxidase inhibitor used to decrease the levels of uric acid therefore preventing kidney problems and gout. This medicine is also prescribed to patients receiving chemotherapy to reduce the high levels of uric acid produced as the result of cells dying. This medication is to be taken by mouth once a day unless otherwise directed by your doctor. If your daily amount is 300 mg, it will probably be divided into several doses to be taken at regular intervals during the day. Make sure you drink plenty of fluids when taking this drug and take every tablet with a full glass of water.
Your doctor may advise you to avoid consuming large amounts of vitamin C and ascorbic acid to prevent acid buildup in the urine. Use this drug regularly to make sure it is working well for you. Do not take more or less than prescribed as your dosage is based on the assessment of your current medical condition. Do not share this drug with people to whom it was not prescribed. Allopurinol does not relieve pain resulting from gout, so it may be combined with other medications prescribed by your doctor to get rid of the pain. Do not start to take any other prescription or over-the-counter medicines without your doctor’s consent.
